- Incidence of Dental Caries and Pericoronitis Associated with Impacted Mandibular Third Molar-A Radiographic Study

Background:
Impacted teeth are those which fail to erupt in dental arch within the expected time for a variety of reasons. Any tooth in the dental arch may become impacted but the most common are mandibular third molars followed by the mandibular premolars. Mandibular third molars erupt at 17 to 21 years age. The mandibular third molars when impacted may acquire a range of patterns and positions and can lead to diverse pathologies. One such pathology is pericoronitis and dental caries. Pericoronitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory condition presenting with pain, swelling, limited jaw opening and difficulty in swallowing.
Objective:
To assess the incidence of dental caries and pericoronitis associated with impacted mandibular third molars using radiographs and look for associations between the angulation of impaction pericoronitis and dental caries.
Materials and methods:
The study was conducted from the archived images exposed between September 2015 - April 2016. The images were from patients who have taken radiographs for impaction.The images were assessed in Planmeca Romexis viewer, Ver 5.0, Planmeca Oy, Finland in the native format. The image data was stored in Microsoft excel 2016, Redmond, WA, USA.
Results:
The study analyzed 273 radiographs from which 236 were picked up for analysis. 37 radiographs were excluded for poor diagnostic quality. For better analysis, the included subjects were classified into three groups of I (16-20 years), II (21-40 years) and III (41-60 years). The group II (21-40 years) showed higher incidence of pericoronitis and dental caries. Conclusion:
The study done by us on retrospective radiographs reveals that there is a higher incidence of pericoronitis across the age groups.

Aim: To analyse the cheiloscopic pattern and mandibular canine index and assess their benefits for gender determination. Materials and methods: The study population comprised 100 subjects inclusive of 50 males and 50 females with an age range of 18-25 from Saveetha Dental College and Hospital. Lip print of each subject was obtained on a bond paper and analysed by Tsuchihashiclassification. Measurements made with a verniercalliperin mm at the contact point of mesiodistal width of the right and left canines and intercanine distance intraorally, and the mandibular canine index (MCI) was calculated. The results were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The most predominant pattern in the entire study population was found to be Type I in females and Type IV in males with significant statistical values. It was also demonstrated that no two lip prints were found to match each other which proves that every individual has unique lip prints.Theintercanine distance, canine width, and canine index were greater in males compared to females indicating significant sexual dimorphism of mandibular canines. Conclusion: Significant sexual dimorphism occursin the pattern of mandibular canine among the males and females thereforecan be used to identify the gender of an individual.Among plethora methods of forensic identification, place for cheiloscopy is recommended within the scope of forensic odontology. Nevertheless, bigger representative sample with sturdy analytical tools can provide a necessary blueprint of human identification. The data of this study proves the occurrence of significant sexual dimorphism in mandibular canines. We can therefore, recommend the use of mandibular canine dimensions as an applicable and additional method for gender determination in human identification.Keywords

Aim: To study the positions and angulations of Maxillary canine impactions.
Materials and Method: The CBCTs of 30 patients who reported with Maxillary canine impactions to the outpatient department of Saveetha Dental College was assessed. The impactions were assessed based on the following variables: Age, Gender, Type of impaction – Buccal/Palatal/In arch, Unilateral or bilateral, Canine angulation, Vertical height, Erikson and Kurol ischolar_main resorption, Power and Short’s Vertical position.
Results: The p-value generated for Vertical height was 0.01670<05, indicating a statistical significant vertical height, while that for canine angulation was 0.374>0.05, indicating a statistical insignificance.
Conclusion: From this study,it was observed that an angulation exceeding 31 degree of the impacted canine decreased the chances of eruption. Also the vertical height of the canine was a factor in determining the impaction of canines.
